A Chance Encounter in Washington D.C.

A Chance Encounter in Washington D.C.

Hyrum’s path to UI Charitable started in an unexpected place—Washington, D.C. While touring the Capitol with his father,

Hyrum met Daniel Blake, the CEO of UI Charitable Advisors. The two were introduced by a mutual connection, a congressman

from Utah.

Hyrum was intrigued by Daniel's work. "I had no experience in the financial world, in philanthropy, or impact investing.

None of it was my language. I didn't understand anything Dan said. But I knew he was smart and doing something good,"

Hyrum recalls.

Commitment

Upon returning home, Hyrum reached out to Daniel and

arranged a breakfast meeting to learn more. With no

background in finance or philanthropy, Hyrum sensed an

opportunity for growth. This curiosity led to a job offer,

which Hyrum accepted, even though it meant stepping

into an unfamiliar world.

In early 2019, Hyrum joined UI Charitable Advisors as a

student, initially focusing on building partnerships with

financial advisors and due diligence for impact investment

opportunities. This role provided Hyrum with invaluable

insight and training in business, finance, and social impact.

Transitioning to Full-Time and the Evolution of UI

Transitioning to Full-Time and the Evolution of UI

As Hyrum neared graduation in the summer of 2020, UI Charitable launched its Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) and charitable

management organization. Recognizing Hyrum’s potential, UI Charitable offered him a full-time position on the operations

team. There, Hyrum’s responsibilities included helping create accounts, processing grants, and providing customer service.

While initially performing day-to-day tasks, Hyrum soon started to understand the broader mission and processes of UI

Charitable. His role evolved, and he began to take on more responsibility, eventually becoming the operations manager.

During this period, Hyrum learned valuable lessons in leadership, goal-setting, and process improvement.

Over time, it became clear that Hyrum's skills were well-suited for

partnership development. Transitioning into this role, Hyrum

focused on building relationships with financial advisors and

expanding UI Charitable’s reach. This shift allowed him to leverage

his natural talents in connecting with people, understanding their

needs, and promoting UI’s mission.

Reflecting on his journey, Hyrum emphasizes the importance of

stepping into the unknown and being proactive in learning.

"Throw yourself into the unknown. Go with your gut if you feel it's

a good opportunity to grow. Be proactive in your learning and

immerse yourself in the experience," he advises.
